About Father Kevin Dyer: A St. Louis-area native, Father Kevin Dyer, SJ, is the national chaplain and vice president of collegiate outreach at the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS). His journey as a Jesuit priest has been marked by a zeal for souls, a passion that continues to guide his life and work. “I feel very much a Jesuit in the mission of evangelization,” Father Dyer said. While the early Jesuits evangelized people who had not heard the gospel, FOCUS is a ministry of the “new evangelization.” “We are mainly located in places where the seeds of the Gospel have already been planted, but they’re growing weak or forgotten. We are reaching people who are either in danger of losing the faith, have already lost the faith, or have never been given the faith,” he said. Reflecting on his time in the Society of Jesus, Father Dyer says he is filled with gratitude. “I appreciate most the way that God has shaped my soul through the life that I’ve lived these 25 years. The way that God’s led me, the people that he’s put into my life, and the opportunities to serve fill me with a tremendous amount of gratitude, and it’s increased my zeal for souls. Time is short in life. We don’t know how much of it we have, and there are a lot of people who need to know Jesus. I think being a Jesuit has increased that zeal in my heart,” he said.

About Father William Oulvey: Reflecting on his diverse assignments, Father Oulvey said, “It’s always been an adventure as a Jesuit. Internally, it has been and continues to be a call to greater trust in God. It has also been an adventure to meet new people from various parts of the world. All of this continues to be a source of grace and life for me.” Ministering to others and being a “sympathetic listening ear,” both to laypeople and brother Jesuits at the beginning of their vocations or at the end of their lives has left an enduring impression. “To be entrusted with their stories, that’s been a powerful gift,” he said. Father Oulvey has found that these relationships have made obedience and availability for mission come easily. “My superiors, my provincials know me, and they’ve listened to what I’ve said, my dreams and desires, and used that knowledge in my assignments. And that is the bottom line after 50 years of this life,” he said. “We are known, we are loved, and therefore we can be sent.”

About Father Patrick Quinn: Celebrating 50 years as a Jesuit in 2024, Father Patrick Quinn, SJ, is a pastor at heart. “There has always been something special to me about parishes,” he said. “Everything happens there, from marriages to funerals, from baptisms to first Communion and confirmations, from Christmas pageants to the candlelit Easter Vigil. It is in parishes that I really came to see the presence of what Pope Francis calls ‘ordinary saints.’” Father Quinn has come to value service as the core of his Jesuit vocation, though it began in a setting far from the parishes where he has most recently ministered: university campus computer systems. “There’s a certain satisfaction of having fixed a problem or solved a dilemma to make things all of a sudden come back to life. But there’s a greater satisfaction from simply being with people,” Father Quinn said. He has carried this into his own ministry with humility and understanding. “When I go to a hospital and I cannot fix it, but I can be there, that teaches me that I’m bringing God in a different way. It’s different to be with than it is to be alone, and to recognize that difference and how much of a difference it does make in people’s lives changes the way in which we do ministry,” he said.
