About Father Michael Joseph Garanzini: Among the many things I learned at St. Ambrose – elementary school and parish – two things stand out the most. I was taught to always remember where I am from and, since all is a gift, remember to give as much as you can to others. Religious life has been for me the best way to practice those two important lessons. The Jesuits allowed me to be a teacher and a counselor, to work with and for wonderful people, and to experience the power of education. The opportunities to serve at a variety of places and in a variety of tasks would not have been possible without the grounding given to me by my family and the neighborhood that I grew up in. At this point in life, it is easier and easier to see how the hand of God led me to the Society of Jesus and to all those who have graced my life.

About Father Frank Reale: 2021 is a year full of “zeros,” insofar as it marks my 70th birthday, my 50th year as a Jesuit, and my 40th as a priest. Mindful of the stereotypical advice of a mother to her children – “watch the company you keep” – I am very grateful that these years have not been empty but have been filled with a rich company consisting of family and friends, as well as of those whom I have been privileged to live with and minister to as a Jesuit. Collectively they have graced me with a satisfaction and peace, a sense of “rightness” about my life, which has enabled me to recognize God’s workings even in particularly difficult and challenging situations. I am reminded of the words of Dorothy Day, “What else do we want, each one of us, except to love and be loved, in our family, in our work, in our relationships.” Again, I am grateful.

About Father Louis J. McCabe: I praise the Lord who has been very good to me these last 50 years. I enjoyed my Jesuit formation with a bachelor’s from Gonzaga University and a master’s in divinity from Saint Louis University. I have been blessed in my assignments from French teacher at St. Louis University High, to socius (assistant) to the provincial, to retreat director at two Jesuit retreat houses, as vocation director and as pastor in Punta Gorda, Belize.
My 18 years at SLUH stand out for me. In my 40 years in St. Louis, I fell in love with the Cardinals and continued reading Shakespeare. To this day, I check the Cardinals score every morning and try to never miss a nearby production of a Shakespearean play. I am young enough to have benefited greatly in my theology studies from the inspirations of Vatican Council II, Church history and the modern approach to Sacred Scripture. Another grace is the Ignatian contemplations in which we place ourselves in one of the Gospel scenes. All these are rich sources for my homilies and retreat talks.
No priest can be successful and happy without lots and lots of help. I give thanks to God each day for the support and encouragement I have received from family, friends, students, parishioners and Jesuit companions. I am immensely grateful to God for my Jesuit community, my priesthood, my Ignatian prayer life and my many ministries. Amen.

About Father Michael V. Tueth: I was born and raised in south St. Louis. My family was the only Irish family in my German neighborhood, but we got along with all the neighbors, even during a World War! I was a happy and outgoing boy. I attended Our Lady of Sorrows grade school and Chaminade College Prep. After finishing high school, I entered the Jesuit order because I really admired my Jesuit uncle, Father Francis J. O’Reilly. This was a good choice, and I have enjoyed it very much. It has been an honor to live with such intelligent, good-humored and very active brothers and priests. In my career, as you can tell, I taught at four Jesuit universities and a couple of other colleges. After getting my doctorate in American civilization, I spent most of my time teaching English and communication, ministering to some excellent college students and presiding at more than 200 weddings. Finally, at the age of 75, I retired and returned to my hometown. Over those many years, I have enjoyed appearing in many plays and became a critic of film, theatre and television. In my retirement, I have spent a good amount of time reading, offering Mass for many parishes and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and going to movies. I am basically in good health and hope to enjoy several more years as a child of God, serving people in need and enjoying my retirement.

About Father Edward B. Arroyo: Looking back on 60 years as a Jesuit, my primary reflection is one of gratitude. Thanks for the family, friends, Jesuit companions who have encouraged me, supported me, put up with me in times of trial, and accompanied me on our pilgrimage toward the sacred we all are called to. For me, this pilgrimage finds its guideposts in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, a school of prayer and a school of discernment. First as one who has made these Exercises in many ways and at many different times and places in my life, starting with high school retreats way back then. And in the most recent years, I’m grateful that my primary Jesuit ministry has become sharing these Exercises with many others, currently at White House Jesuit Retreat south of St. Louis. I’ve been blessed, maybe even plagued, by an incredible amount of diversity in my Jesuit ministries over the years, many of them spent in leadership positions, others in social research, education and action based on the rich tradition of Catholic Social Teaching, as well as the sociological tradition and profession. And what awaits me as I cherish the gift of years on into the future? Who knows? My hope is that the blessings and the burdens of aging will continue along the pilgrimage of the Spiritual Exercises, from Ignatius’ “First Principle and Foundation” to his “Contemplation on divine love,” acknowledging with Jesuit poet Gerard Manley Hopkins: “Thee, God, I come from, to thee go.”

About Father Thomas J. Melancon: My favorite Scripture verses come from the second readings of the night and morning Masses of Christmas Day, Titus 3:4-5: “When the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, not because of any righteous deed we had done but, because of His mercy, He saved us through the bath of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit.” Also, earlier Titus 2:11-12: “For the grace of God has appeared, saving all, and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires, and to live justly and devoutly in this age.” The Society of Jesus has called me as minister to our theology students at Weston to provide a comfortable home for them as they did their studies, and as director, to provide the same for our elderly and sick men at the Fusz Pavilion. I am grateful that Our Lord called me to serve Him in His ministry of faithful and loving kindness. These were my two favorite ministries, and I believe that they have informed all of my other work.
