Archdiocese of St. Louis Blue Mass

The Church’s tradition of showing gratitude to emergency responders began when a Catholic priest from the Archdiocese of Baltimore
organized the Catholic Police and Firemen’s Society while stationed at St. Patrick Church in Washington, D.C.
On Sept. 29, 1934, more than 1,000 police officers and firefighters, dressed in their blue uniforms,
attended a Mass that has since come to be known in churches across the country as the “Blue Mass.” The Archdiocese of St. Louis each year
invites members of law enforcement and first responders to join in prayer, seeking God’s blessing for those who serve and protect.
