A funeral Mass was celebrated for Sister Joyce Landreman Nov. 24 at Nazareth Living Center in south St. Louis County. She died of cancer Nov. 17 at Nazareth at age 92.
Born in Milwaukee, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1951 and was received into the novitiate in 1952 as Sister Norbert Mary. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Fontbonne College in 1962 and a master’s degree in elementary education from Saint Louis University in 1968.
Sister Joyce was a teacher for 20 years. She taught at St. Gregory School in St. Ann from 1954-61. She also taught in Colorado and Georgia and was a teacher and principal in Oklahoma. In Missouri, Sister Joyce was the principal of a school in Raytown and principal and teacher in St. Joseph.
After teaching, Sister Joyce was a parish secretary in Colorado and Kansas City, Missouri. She served her CSJ community as secretary at the St. Joseph Provincial House in St. Louis for a year and was a pastoral assistant at St. Catherine of Sienna Parish in St. Louis from 1980-82.
Sister Joyce spent four years in Houston as the adult education coordinator at a parish. In Green Bay, Wisconsin, she served as a pastoral assistant at a parish; a receptionist at a county commission on aging; and as an adult education teacher of English as a second language at a school and a boys and girls club.
Sister Joyce retired to St. Louis in 2007. Since 2010, she served her community in prayer and presence at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis.
Survivors include two sisters, Myrna Horgan of Plover, Wisconsin, and Rita Kaczmarek of Glen Ellen, Virginia; and a brother, Norbert Landreman of Racine, Wisconsin. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.
