The concept of the new evangelization was introduced years before their entrance into the seminary. But six men to be ordained this week are living in the heart of the new evangelization -- which, put simply, calls on Catholics to reinvigorate those who have fallen away from their faith.

For many years people have asked, "Why doesn't the Church do more to promote vocations?"

Catholic dioceses, religious communities, schools and others have worked hard to promote vocations. In recent years those efforts have become more finely tuned, thanks in part to various studies that have not only focused on specific needs but also have revealed more of a willingness among young people to consider vocations than many had thought.

Vocations Office accepting nominations for annual Fisher of Men award

Submissions are open for the Fisher of Men Award, presented annually to an archdiocesan pastor who has fostered a genuine culture of vocations in his priestly ministry, inspiring young men and women to follow Christ in the priesthood and religious life.

The award, now in its second year, is sponsored by the archdiocesan Office of Vocations. Father Christopher Martin, vocations director, is inviting members of Catholic parishes throughout the Archdiocese of St. Louis to nominate their pastors for the honor.

The Catholic Church in the United States is celebrating National Vocation Awareness Week Jan. 13-19. The annual event is a reminder for parishes and individuals to consider the importance of promoting the role of priests, deacons and religious order brothers and sisters to Catholics deciding on their future.

The help is needed because she is among at least a third of the estimated 10,000 individuals discerning a priestly or religious vocation in the U.S. who are blocked from pursuing their call due to educational loans.

Christopher Rubie first thought about becoming a priest when he was in high school. He attended a Kenrick-Glennon Days summer camp, something that many high school boys do as they're thinking about the vocation.

But the feeling started to wane when he entered college. He got involved in campus life and soon the thought of the priesthood became a distant past. Rubie went on to earn a bachelor's degree in philosophy and, later, a master's degree in legal studies.

We should not be surprised that the Church is in constant state of renewal and reform. After all, she is, as Christ's Body and Bride, a living thing. The third orders have always played a vital role in that renewal. Their growth accelerated greatly in response to the crises of the 13th century.

The 2012-13 academic year is under way at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, as late last month it welcomed 26 new seminarians to join 82 returning seminarians. These 108 young men are preparing for priestly ministry in many dioceses, including St. Louis, Colorado Springs, Knoxville, Bismarck and Belize City.

Two Benedictines at St. Louis Abbey in Creve Coeur have been ordained transitional deacons by Archbishop Robert J. Carlson.

Brother Francis Hein and Brother Cassian Koenemann, both natives of the St. Louis Archdiocese, were ordained Aug. 11 at the Abbey Church of St. Mary and St. Louis.

Recent attention to the Leadership Conference of Women Religious is expected to increase as almost 900 women religious will converge upon St. Louis for the organization's annual assembly Aug. 7-11 at the Millennium Hotel Downtown.

In April, the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith announced a major reform of the LCWR, which has more than 1,500 members of U.S. congregations of women religious. They represent about 80 percent of the 57,000 women religious in the United States. It currently holds a canonical status that is granted by the Vatican.
