The Catholic Youth Apostolate's Catholic Youth Council has announced the champions of the 2013 archdiocesan basketball playoffs in the boys and girls divisions.

This season represented a new beginning, with the addition of several teams in the St. Charles District, and a shift, as teams in the St. Louis City District move to other districts.

When Tommy Barlow talks soccer, he could easily bring up his personal accomplishments. He netted the ball 27 times last season and assisted his teammates with 17 goals. He was a leader of the Chaminade soccer team that advanced to the Class 3 state championship game. He was named Gatorade Missouri Boys Soccer Player of the Year, was an All-American selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and chosen as the Missouri Soccer Coaches Association Class 3 Player of the Year.

Wrestling will be dropped as an Olympic sport starting in 2020 if a decision by the International Olympic Committee holds.

The committee voted last month to drop wrestling from the list of 25 core sports, allowing it to add one more sport, such as sport climbing, wakeboarding or karate.

If wrestling is dropped, it will be a shame. Wrestling is recognized as the world's oldest competitive sport. According to a history of the sport on the Olympics website, it was introduced into the ancient Olympics in 708 B.C., shortly after the games' recorded history began.

A funeral Mass Jan. 26 at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis for Stan Musial — "a true American hero" — brought comfort to those mourning the loss and a call for others to emulate his life of kindness to all.

"Your servant Stanley, who has fallen asleep in Christ," may rejoice to rise again through Him, Archbishop Robert J. Carlson noted in the opening prayer.

St. Louis Rams' cornerback Bradley Fletcher smiled a lot during his visit to St. Frances Cabrini Academy in south St. Louis.

That smile might have been its widest in the first-grade classroom when he fielded questions as smoothly as intercepting an errant pass.

"Is your favorite play the Hail Mary?" asked a Catholic schoolgirl who managed to mix her religion and football.

Fletcher laughed and noted that if his team is making a Hail Mary pass it means they are desperately seeking a touchdown as time runs out. So, no, with respect to the mother of Jesus, it's not his favorite.

Cor Jesu's field hockey team has had a season to remember, picking up praises from across the St. Louis area and beyond.

No matter what happens in the Midwest Field Hockey semifinals (scheduled after press time, Nov. 1) and the championship game Nov. 3, it has been an amazing season for Cor Jesu.

St. Elizabeth Academy’s steady play piles up wins

St. Elizabeth Academy's softball team turned in its most successful regular season in at least a decade with a 19-6 win vs.Villa Duchesne Oct. 1.

The win sent the team into district competition Oct. 4 with a 14-4 record.

St. Elizabeth's head coach Bob O'Toole, whose team struggled for victories the last few seasons, noted that their fortunes turned around due to good defense and pitching. Shortstop Jen Strebeck, one of just three seniors on the team, added key defensive plays.
