Letters to the editor | Feb. 3, 2012

Conscience rights

In his two classic biographies of Blessed John Paul II ("Witness to Hope" and "The End and the Beginning: Pope John Paul II -- The Victory of Freedom, the Last Years, the Legacy"), George Weigel depicted how the pope, who lived under communism, understood the importance of religious freedom. His efforts in restoring religious freedom were what turned the tide against the Eastern European communist regimes. For if religious freedom did not exist, neither did other basic freedoms.

Letters to the Editor, Jan. 6, 2012

12 days of Christmas

Regrettably, Christmas trees have been popping up curbside since Dec. 26. Having endured commercial holiday sights/sounds since early November, it's understandable that folks are ready for change. Still, many Catholic households (and beyond), keep trees and decorations for the full 12 days to Epiphany Jan. 8 (and even till the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, Jan. 9).

Where charity begins

Where charity begins

Is the purpose of your editorial ("The good and bad in U.S. immigration laws," Nov. 4) to remind all legal American citizens that it is "right" and "just" to see their tax dollars support the education of children whose parents deliberately broke the law? Sure, successful illegal alien children should have the right to try for scholarships and loans as long as their education is not being supported by tax dollars.

Letters to the editor | Oct. 14, 2011

Intrinsic evils

The Oct. 7 edition contained two very interesting articles.

One was the USCCB (U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops) launching a new website for "Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizens," listing problems involving opposition to intrinsic evils. Abortion and threats to the lives and dignity of others who are vulnerable were the first listed. The article does not tell Catholics whom to vote for, but the U.S. bishops have stated that this kind of political responsibility is a requirement of our faith.

Remembering 9/11

The editorial, "Ten years later: We remember" (Sept 9, 2011) was thoughtful, with its emphasis on how the 9/11 victims are "bound together with us" because we are all image of God and its call to remember "in forgiveness and mercy" rather than "hatred or malevolence." Saying "beyond our borders, untold millions the world over remember with us" echoed the Sept. 12, 2001, headline in Le Monde that read, "We are all Americans."

Bishop Johnston thanks the faithful of St. Louis for genrous Jolin aid.

THANKS FOR JOPLIN SUPPORT

Dear Friends in Christ of the Archdiocese of St. Louis,

These days since the devastating tornado struck the city of Joplin on May 22, 2011, have been very eventful. The scale of destruction and suffering is difficult to describe, and much remains to be done. Yet, there are also too many signs of God's grace to count and much to be grateful for, which brings me to the purpose of this letter.

Pro-Life Concerns of Special Session

Gov. Nixon and members of the Mo. Legislature are considering calling a special session in September to consider an omnibus economic development bill.

One likely part of this bill would be The Missouri Science Innovation & Reinvestment Act (MOSIRA). MOSIRA sets up a fund, channeled through the state budget and to be administered by the pro-cloning Missouri Technology Corporation, to provide state money and/or tax incentives for new technology businesses, including businesses engaged in human life science research.

I am writing with an unfortunate sense of frustration. As the Director of Operations with Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center, one of the key elements of my position is to seek opportunities to schedule blood drives throughout the St. Louis area. Our nonprofit organization is the exclusive provider of blood products to the Sisters of St. Mary Health Centers in this community. This includes, SSM-Cardinal Glennon, SSM-St. Mary's, SSM-St. Clare, SSM-DePaul, SSM-St. Joseph's and SSM-St. Joseph's West.

Letters to the Editor | The dress | Don't give up |

The dress

The royal wedding has come and gone, with the bride and groom dressed in their finest. I was especially taken by the bride's dress, which covered her shoulders and arms; yet she was beautiful. Already this dress is being copied, and what I hope is that this may be the beginning of a new style of wedding dresses, instead of the strapless ones that have been so popular for many years. It's time for a change.

Explaining

Columnist John Ryan wrote that “Catholics who, in the last general election, voted for the most pro-abortion president in history” have “a lot of explaining to do to Gianna.” (Viewpoints, April 29)

Letters to the Editor | April 29

NCR's bias

Turbulence surrounding Vatican II stemmed from a vociferous minority hoping to alter the faith of the Catholic Church in regard to ordination of women, gender preferences within marriage and pregnancy choice. Enhanced social sensitivity, a specious claim, was touted as both rationale and reward. The National Catholic Reporter -- terming itself an independent Catholic newspaper -- has long been associated with this bias.

Letters to the editor | Competitive journalism

I was disappointed to read the story about "Quest for the Living God" by Sister Elizabeth Johnson (Media & Arts, April 15). The story begins with the author, Jack Smith, admitting he knows nothing about her or the book. More strangely, it continues into a criticism of the Catholic Press Association and the National Catholic Reporter. What a better Church we would have if more papers were as good as the NCR.
