Letters to the Editor | May 13-19, 2013

Be inviting

The special insert on reaching out to young adults is well done, and the archdiocese is to be commended for adopting Theology on Tap and other efforts to reach those alienated from organized religion. Unfortunately, the front page headline proclaiming "On cue to eliminate 'NONES'" sends the wrong message. In a culture where we talk about eliminating the opposition and other shades of hostility associated with the word, I don't think that is what such ministry intends. Inviting, Converting, Engaging -- yes. Eliminating -- no.

Out of place

Recently I attended 5 p.m. Mass to celebrate my nephew's First Communion.

I was never more appalled at the behavior of not only the young children in the pews in front of our family, but of the adults as well, using cell phones and electronic games to keep the kids occupied. It was so distracting and took away from the true meaning of the Mass itself. Since when has the accepted behavior in church been completely forgotten?

Religious Freedom

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."

This right among our other precious rights guarantees not just the freedom of worship, which is largely done within four walls, but the freedom to express one's religion in concrete ways in the public square: by works of charity, caring for the poor and homeless, the sick in hospitals and in providing formal education on all levels and assisting victims of private and public disasters.

Ten Commandments

God gave us all our freedoms. If we live our lives in our faith, the world will find peace and goodwill to all. None of us is perfect, but God will always love us and forgive us if we ask in true sorrow. Just think back when businesses started selling all things on Sunday, that was the start of money and material things becoming more important than God.

Having had the privilege to teach theology at St. Elizabeth Academy since 1983, I treasure having seen God's love alive in a very cosmopolitan student body. The ladies at St. Elizabeth Academy know that loving one's neighbor includes all people, because here we have them all!

Follow the footsteps

I have been volunteering in emergency services for 34 years and have been a fire chaplain for the last 21 years with several fire departments, depending on where the bishop stations me. During that time, I have seen many different scenes.

As I watched this event (the school shootings in Newtown, Conn.) unfold on television, I felt the heartbreak of the town, although not as deeply as the residents. ... I am well aware of the long-term ramifications of this event for those involved.

Opinions

With all due respect to George Weigel and the fact that his column is on the opinion page, he states matters as fact that are highly biased opinions. His assertion that "there are precious few decent settings for the revised Ordinary of the Mass" is patently absurd. While there are some poor attempts, there are many fine traditional and contemporary settings from all three major publishers and many independent composers -- that he has not heard any that he likes is irrelevant, as composers write to meet the needs of all of God's people, not just one Op Ed writer.

Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Your coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Nov. 21 edition was incredibly biased.

The article "Catholics on both side of the Gaza border prayed for hostilities to end" featured 18 paragraphs with quotes from people in Gaza about the suffering there, including a large color photo with a caption about casualties in Gaza. The last two paragraphs had a brief statement from an Israeli.

The only photo of Israelis was in the story on the pope's appeal for peace which showed Israeli soldiers.

Exemplary

It was heartening to read the story about Msgr. Joseph Baker and Vatican II. His on-the-scene perspective has always been an invaluable help in better understanding the council's purpose and effect on the Church these past 50 years. And, when Msgr. Baker describes our present Holy Father as "a priest of Vatican II," anybody who has been blessed to know Msgr. Baker can tell you that he is an exemplary Vatican II priest, too! He is and has always been a true gift to our archdiocese.

Letters | Asking questions

In the Review's Aug. 6-12 lead article, "A time for community within the Church," a statement attributed to Sister Pat Farrell, OSF, if accurate, is puzzling. Sister Pat's concern about whether one can "be a Catholic and have a questioning mind" seems not to appreciate the difference between asking questions and adopting positions.

Letters | Forum for dissidents

Forum for dissidents

I am puzzled by the extensive coverage of the schismatic Society of St. Pius X, including a large picture of illicit ordinations conducted by the organization. Bishop Fellay, superior general of the group, was quoted extensively, including remarks critical of the newly appointed head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The article gave Fellay the opportunity spread his views without any rebuttal from an official Vatican source. Why would the St. Louis Review would provide these dissidents with such a forum?
