Archbishop’s installation: What to know before you go

As the installation Mass for Archbishop-elect Robert J. Carlson approaches next week, there are several things you should know before going. For more installation coverage, visit the Saint Louis Review's Installation page. The Saint Louis Review has compiled a list of questions and answers for the event:

What events are open to the public?

The Evening Prayer service, to be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, and the installation, 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, are open to the public. The procession before the installation Mass will begin at 1:30 p.m. Both events will be held at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, Lindell Boulevard and Newstead Avenue in the Central West End.

In addition, a reception will follow both events at Rosati-Kain High School, located next door. The receptions also are open to the public. There is no cost to attend.

What is Evening Prayer?

As a tradition, the Evening Prayer service is generally held the night before an archbishop’s installation. During the service, religious and civic leaders, as well as representatives of the various groups that make up the Archdiocese of St. Louis will be presented to Archbishop-elect Carlson.

Media coverage provides time for uplifting reflection

On April 21, The Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson was presented to the St. Louis media as the 10th bishop, ninth archbishop, of St. Louis. On April 27th, the Most Reverend Timothy Michael Dolan was installed as the 10th Archbishop of New York. Both events were of dynamic interest to St. Louis Catholics — we have a new archbishop and one of our native sons is now the leader of the second-largest diocese in the United States.

These events received considerable media attention in both the archdiocese and the nation, and with good reason. St. Louis and New York have rich Catholic histories. The announcement of the appointment and the beauty of the installation were covered favorably by many media outlets. After more than nine months without an ordinary, it’s clear why the local media focused attention on Archbishop-elect Carlson. And given the stature of New York, it was to be expected that Archbishop Dolan’s installation would garner significant attention.

In both cities, a distinct sense of love and relief could be felt. Perhaps that is due to the extremely personable nature of both men. But what was surprising was the clearly positive nature of the coverage.
