Islamic center debate

Arguing against the Ground Zero mosque is not a matter of distrust of ordinary Muslims, many of whom also oppose the mosque, nor of intolerance of their faith. To compare the opposition to the mosque to historical opposition of Catholics as suggested in the article, "Islamic center debate is exercise in religious understanding" (Aug. 27), is likewise disingenuous.

Call to obedience

We Americans are privileged to live in a democracy where we can still speak our minds -- whether we are well intended or not, whether we are well informed or not. Some well intended but misinformed Catholics in St. Louis believe a solution can be found in the St. Stanislaus battle with the archdiocese by finding a middle ground. This is naive.

Finding middle ground may work in a democracy but the Church is not a democracy. The faithful are not...

St. Stanislaus

How sad it is to see the ongoing conflict between the archdiocese and those making decisions at beautiful St. Stanislaus unresolved after all this time.

Although not a member of St. Stanislaus, I attended Mass there a number of times over the years and have friends who are longtime registered members. Unjust dismissal

I wish someone could help me understand why adjunct professor Kenneth Howell is no longer teaching two courses on Catholicism at the University of Illinois. It seems that if one enrolled in a Catholicism class that he or she would expect to hear about Catholic doctrine, whether or not one believed it to be true.
