During the final weeks of Lent, Catholics will be queuing up for the Sacrament of Penance. With Confession and absolution come the renewal of our baptismal identity with Christ. The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation is the Lord's gift to the Church to forgive the sins committed after Baptism and to reconcile the penitent with our Redeemer and His Church.

For some, it will be a first-time experience. They are the candidates for admission into the Church by a Profession of Faith an...

In an interview last month, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi claimed that Catholic bishops she had spoken with endorsed the current Senate health care bill under consideration in the House. She also claimed that the bill was abortion neutral, which remains flatly false.

The House version of the health care bill protects the principles of the Hyde Amendment, which has been law for more than 30 years, by maintaining that federal dollars won't go toward paying for so-called "elective" abor...

Soon, legislators in Jefferson City may consider an amendment to the Missouri Constitution that would replace the state’s current tax structure with a new and expanded state sales tax.

The Church is missionary by its very nature, and Christians, disciples of Jesus Christ, are called to be stewards of the Church's mission. This is the "great commission" which the Lord gave to his disciples before he ascended into heaven: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19).

As stewards of this mission, we are called to be the guardians or caretakers of all the gifts we have received from God. To exercise this stewardship responsibility...

In his stewardship talks, the late Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy praised the generosity of the American people in their response to natural disasters. Hurricanes, floods and earthquakes bring out the best in us, he said. Occasions for solidarity and unprecedented generosity, they allow us to set aside our selfish preoccupations and to reach out to our sisters and brothers in need.

But then Archbishop Murphy, who served as chairman of the U.S. bishops' ad hoc committee on stewardship, poi...

We often pride ourselves as an open-minded, liberated society. The ability to express our minds freely is a cherished right. Our Constitution guarantees our freedom of speech. In theory, no constraint is placed upon it. The truth, however, is that reality falls far short of promise

How else can we describe the outcry against the message Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow and his mother, Pam, seek to air Sunday during the Super Bowl on CBS? It is a message of truth, without deception or di...

During the last five years there have been a number of studies published, some scholarly and some more popular, regarding Christian faith as the basis for Western culture and civilization. Pope Benedict XVI has resisted the effort to revise European and Western cultural history by ignoring the contribution of faith to education and civilized life.

No serious historian can discount the contribution of the monastic movement of the first half of Christian history to civilize the barbarian...

Americans have heard much about change in the last year. A lot of the change in American life of late is troubling. However, what is becoming clearer day by day is a developing and abiding assertion on the part of a majority of Americans who value the pro-life message and its ethos. In a May 2009 Gallup poll, 51 percent of Americans described themselves as pro-life; in a recent Pew poll 54 percent of American's surveyed described themselves as pro-life. The significance of such numbers is thi...

Once again the nation prepares to pause for a moment to reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In just a few short decades, the holiday commemorating the work of Dr. King to overcome racial discrimination has become a part of the fabric of life in our nation.

<!--break-->

Very few people question the legitimacy and necessity of this holiday and, for a large segment of the population having grown up in a nation free from racial violence and discrimination, t...
