Demolition begins on tornado-ravaged hospital in Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. -- The battered St. John's Mercy Hospital saw its first wrecking ball Jan. 29 -- a small step in a demolition process that will eventually bring down the tornado-ravaged buildings on the site and leave the land ready for rebuilding.

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure has reversed its decision to halt grants to Planned Parenthood, leaving members of the local and national pro-life community dazed.

The organization apologized and has decided to revise its policy that led to its earlier decision to cut funding to the nation's largest abortion provider.

The Missouri Knights of Columbus are inviting Catholic men to become members of the world's largest lay Catholic fraternal service organization.

Archbishop Robert J. Carlson and the bishops of the three other dioceses in Missouri have written letters sent to parishes asking men to learn more about the Knights of Columbus. Members of Knights' councils will be on hand at Masses Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 18 and 19, to answer questions.

The time for discussion is over, and the time for action has begun.

On Feb. 2, Archbishop Robert J. Carlson presented at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Manchester his priorities for Catholic education in the Archdiocese of St. Louis and the steps to be taken to achieve them.

Members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of St. Louis quietly answer calls made each year from thousands of people who reach out for help.

They rely on the generosity of others who share the blessings they have received.

Currently the Society is seeking donations for the Food and Fuel for Life program. Winter is a time when funds especially are needed as people in need seek to keep warm and put food on the table.

Legislative group in Missouri details corrections reform package

A corrections reform package estimated to reduce the prison population by as many as 677 people by fiscal year 2017 and save between $7.7 and $16.6 million is a step in the right direction, according to the Missouri Catholic Conference (MCC).

A bipartisan effort has emerged to pass corrections reform legislation, the MCC noted, spurred on by the continuing state budget crisis. Missouri's prison population has doubled and corrections spending has tripled during the past 20 years. As a result, state leaders this summer created the Missouri Working Group on Sentencing and Corrections.

JEFFERSON CITY — Archbishop Robert J. Carlson and Catholic school administrators from around Missouri expressed their support this week for a proposal to create a tax-credit supported scholarship program for students in unaccredited districts to attend private or parochial schools.

Sen. Jane Cunningham, R-Chesterfield, is the sponsor of the bill, Senate Bill 706, which was heard in the Missouri Senate's General Laws Committee. It would also annex the unaccredited Kansas City public school district to neighboring districts.

Missouri Catholic Conference: Act now to preserve rights of conscience

The Missouri Catholic Conference, public policy agency of the state's bishops, is asking people support for the "Respect for Rights of Conscience Act."

A recent federal Health and Human Services directive mandating abortion-inducing emergency contraception and birth control coverage in health plans is "a direct attack on the conscience rights and the religious liberty of Catholics and others of faith," a message from the Catholic Conference stated.

Waving flags and holding signs, people three deep along the parade route yelled "Welcome home," "You rock" and "We salute you" to troops who have returned from Iraq. They were taking part in the nation's first Welcome Home the Heroes from Iraq Day on Jan. 28 in Downtown St. Louis.

A weekend of saluting veterans of the war in Iraq brought the sacrifices of those who served to the forefront at a solemn remembrance Jan. 27 and 28 at the Soldier's Memorial in Downtown St. Louis.

Names of each soldier killed in the war were read and a bell tolled to honor them. The names were read beginning at 9:11 p.m. Jan. 27 and continuing up until a parade at noon Jan. 27 to welcome home the troops from Iraq.

Kenrick-Glennon Seminary renovation maintains character, adds updates

Skilled craftsmen from various construction trades are busy carrying out the renovation and expansion of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in Shrewsbury.

The recent "Faith for the Future" capital campaign for the seminary is providing resources for much-needed improvements. The campaign has supported updates and repairs to the building and directed funds to an endowment.

The project includes remodeled student rooms and common areas, extensive library renovations and additional faculty offices and classrooms.

Youth sports are a foundation for children's future, setting in motion values they will carry long after they continue playing.

Coaches and parents who gathered at the 2012 St. Louis Youth Sports Summit were urged to focus on building character in young people and stressing sportsmanship. The summit was held Jan. 14 at Maryville University and sponsored by the St. Louis Sports Commission.

Shooting at trivia night at Wentzville parish called 'tragically unintentional'

What was planned as "a night of fun for a great cause" ended in what police have called a "tragically unintentional" shooting at a Jan. 21 trivia night fundraiser at St. Patrick Parish in Wentzville.

Police said the victim, 23-year-old Aaron Dwan, was in serious but stable condition after being transported to a hospital.

State: Abortions in Missouri decrease by 9.4 percent

According to newly released information from the Missouri Department of Health, Missouri women had 1,019 fewer abortions in 2010 than in the previous year -- a 9.4 percent decline.

The Missouri Catholic Conference, public policy agency of the state's bishops, stated that the decrease represented the fewest number of abortions performed in Missouri since 1973.
