Archbishop Pietro Sambi, the Holy Father’s diplomatic representative to the U.S., died Wednesday evening, July 27, at the Baltimore hospital where he had been placed in assisted ventilation after complications following a lung surgery performed two weeks ago.

Pope Benedict XVI urged delivery of humanitarian aid to the drought-stricken Horn of Africa, where tens of thousands have fled drought and famine. Two individuals from the Archdiocese of St. Louis are visiting the area to help assist some of those affected to overcome poverty in the longer term through microfinancing.

Pope Benedict XVI announced July 19 he has accepted the resignation of former St. Louis Archbishop Justin Rigali. Rigali, 76, reached the age of retirement in 2010. Archbishop Chaput will be installed Sept. 8 in Philadelphia.
