Archbishop Robert J. Carlson and Father Luis Mesa, superior of the Messengers of Peace, at the planned site of Villa Guadalupe, a residence for girls whose families are unable to care for them outside Sutamarchán, Colombia. When not in prayer, the Messengers of Peace focus on serving those most in need. The archbishop was instrumental in supporting Father Mesa in founding the Messengers of Peace and also secured private funding to build the girls’ residence.

Sister Paulina Vidal, one of three professed sisters with the Messengers of Peace, spoke with Archbishop Robert J. Carlson, Father Luis Mesa, superior of the Messengers of Peace, and Msgr. Francis X. Blood, director of the St. Louis archdiocesan Mission Office and the Latin America Apostolate, during a visit there last month. Archbishop Carlson received the vows of three women for the community last summer.

Archbishop Robert J. Carlson renewed Father Luis Mesa’s vows as a member of the Messengers of Peace during Mass Dec. 11 in Colombia.

Father Luis Mesa, Msgr. Francis X. Blood and Father Brian Fischer, secretary to the archbishop, visited with residents of St. Joseph Home for the elderly in Villa de Leyva. The Messengers of Peace minister to various communities, including the elderly, children and poor in Colombia.

Msgr. Francis X. Blood visited with Pauledt Pinilla, far left, and girls from the Asociación Talita Kum, which provides residential care to girls whose parents can no longer care for them. Pinilla, who directs the residence in Pauna, recently was honored by the president of Colombia as a "Woman of the Year" for her work with the foundation.

Archbishop Robert J. Carlson, and Father Luis Mesa spent time with members of the Messengers of Peace during the archbishop's visit to the community last month. There currently are eight members in the community. A ninth person is considering entering the community. There also are three professed sisters in the community.
