Catholic Schools Week 2010

During Catholic Schools Week, parish schools submitted photos of special events and activities to mark the celebration. From reaching out to the people of Ghana to assisting the elderly in their own communities, students and teachers from all over the region demonstrated why Catholic schools are truly "the Good News in education.

First- and second-graders at St. Joan of Arc School in South St. Louis raised money for the Ghana ministry of Sister Ann Coleman, a former teacher, by selling popcorn, lemonade and wagon rides for preschoolers during the school’s “Zoo Night.” Students also presented reports about the habitats they designed and created.

Catholic school children learned the characteristics of a student ambassador during a workshop sponsored by the Catholic Education Office. The workshops teach students how to effectively market their schools to their parish and their community.

Dr. Thomas Stanley, a pediatrician in Jacksonville, Fla., gave a pro-life presentation to a class at Valle Catholic School. Stanley’s visit in January coincided with the annual March for Life trip taken by high school juniors and seniors at Valle.

Students at Gateway Academy in Wildwood showed their appreciation for their teachers during Catholic Schools Week by dressing up as waitresses and waiters and going classroom to classroom serving each teacher coffee, tea and doughnuts.

Seventh- and eighth-grade yearbook club students at Little Flower School in Richmond Heights walked on the new Interstate 64 (Highway 40 locally) on Dec. 1 with principal Bob Baird and several teachers before the road was opened. The school is off I-64 in Richmond Heights. The group posed for this photograph for the cover of their yearbook, titled “Little Flower School — Building the Road to a Great Education.”

Eighth-graders Caitlin Brennan, Meg Hruz, Elise Webster and Brenna Reilly from St. Joseph School in Manchester performed a liturgical movement to “Sing Alleluia” before the Mass celebrated at St. Joseph Church on Jan. 26 for schools in Region 3. Archbishop Robert J. Carlson celebrated the Mass in conjunction with Catholic Schools Week.

Pictures created by students at Most Sacred Heart School in Florissant were put on display Jan. 31 for the school’s open house during Catholic Schools Week. More than 300 attended the open house, which featured an art fair along with a portable planetarium and several hands-on activities from the Saint Louis Science Center.

Students at St. Angela Merici School in Florissant proudly showed off certificates earned for their pro-life essays.

Eight-graders at St. Norbert Catholic School in Florissant wrote their own devotionals reflecting on poverty as they participated in the school's neighborhood church community program.

Abi Olmos, a student at St. Cecilia Academy in South St. Louis, volunteered with her classmates at a local retirement home.

A student at St. Justin Martyr School in Sunset Hills used clues from Scripture readings for a treasure hunt at his school during its open house.
