Master calligrapher and manuscript illuminator Bernard Maisner brings together text, materials and design in unexpected ways, arriving at a vibrant compositional and scribal expression rooted in the past but conveyed with a fresh contemporary visual vocabulary. Six large-scale paintings (the artist calls them “giant miniatures”) recently gifted to the museum are accompanied by smaller-scale illuminated manuscripts and paintings.
