Vianney meets expectations with state title

Expectations were high for St. John Vianney's baseball team this year after it came within a whisker of going to the state final last year.

This year's team reached the title game June 1 at Car Shield Field in O'Fallon. Noah Niznik's four-plus innings in relief and an offense determined to bounce back from an early deficit led to an 8-2 win over Hickman and a Class 5 championship.

Valle Catholic's season marked by poise, determination

Valle High School’s Coleman Keeley drove the ball upcourt in a game Jan. 26 against Jefferson High School. Jefferson won 52-51 on a last-second shot.

After a fast start, shots began hitting the rim and bouncing out for Valle High School's boys basketball team in their game Jan. 26 at Jefferson High School in Festus.

The team from Ste. Genevieve had taken a comfortable lead in the early minutes of the game before Jefferson came back just before halftime. Thanks to timely three-point shots, the public school in Festus took the lead in the second half. Though their shots went cold, Valle's players stepped it up on defense, keeping the game close throughout.

High school football outlook for 2015

Bishop DuBourg Catholic High School’s football team started summer practice on August 3 and has been working intensely ever since. DuBourg running backs Jordan Holmes rans through some plays at practice Aug. 10.

Last season, two Catholic schools in the archdiocese won state championships — Christian Brothers College High School and Valle Catholic High School.
