Mary statue gets new home as archdiocesan schools repurpose former JFK items

St. Mary’s High School recently installed a Mary statue that used to reside on the front lawn outside the former convent at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School.

On that day in August, St. Mary's High School principal Kevin Hacker was on a scouting mission at the former John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Manchester.

The archdiocese, which closed Kennedy in May and owned the property, had invited archdiocesan high school officials for a walk-through to claim items for use in their schools: office and sports equipment, student desks, classroom supplies — whatever wasn't nailed down. But something caught Hacker's eye outside.

A statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the earthly mother of Jesus Christ, and namesake of St. Mary's High School.

Historic Fatima statue becomes centerpiece of pilgrimage site for centenary celebration

Parishioners pass by the Our Lady of Fatima Statue at the Basilica of St. Louis, King of France (Old Cathedral) on July 8 during evening Mass.

In May 1970, Cardinal John J. Carberry led a delegation of 88 people from St. Louis on a pilgrimage to Fatima, Portugal. It was the first time an English-speaking prelate had been invited to celebrate Mass at the Fatima shrine; he did so before an estimated 500,000 pilgrims from around the world on May 13 — the 53rd anniversary of the Blessed Mother's first apparition to three Portuguese children.

Catholic by Grace | Image of Infant of Prague provokes a turnaround

Last spring, I wanted a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. My web search yielded many images, including a few of the Infant of Prague. I made my decision on the Sacred Heart statue and placed the order, but I couldn't stop thinking about the Infant of Prague images.

Every now and then, my former Protestant bias resurfaces. It happened last spring as I studied the images of the Infant of Prague. I did not feel any affection for this devotion. Not a bit. I've learned to pause when I feel like this and try to go deeper. What was it about this image that bothered me?
