St. Stephen School provided ‘a foundation for life’

Joan Lawder held a picture of her graduating 1944 class from St. Stephen Protomartyr School in south St. Louis. She has been a parishioner at St. Stephen for almost all of her life, and lives in Holly Hills with her husband, Michael.

It's the 90th anniversary of St. Stephen Protomartyr School in south St. Louis, and Joan Lawder has a multi-layered connection that spans those years.

Students put their hearts into messages of peace

The Hearts For Ferguson campaign seeks to send a message of love and support with their hand crafted hearts to students at schools in the Ferguson area. James Rowe, a student at St. Stephen Protomartyr, decorated his heart with a happy face, as a sign of support for the students in Ferguson.

St. Stephen Protomartyr School third-grader Keira Dawson wasted no time in getting to work on the Hearts for Ferguson project, with colored markers in hand and the creative process flowing.

Students at the school had been asked to send some love to the children at schools in Ferguson, where a police shooting of an 18-year-old sparked protests and violence covered by media worldwide.

"I'm writing 'peace' with a rainbow and peace sign," Keira said, while coloring a heart she would cut out with scissors. "I just think it will make more peace in Ferguson."
