At annual March for Life, crowds show endurance, passion to continue

LISA JOHNSTON | lisajohnston@archstl.org Pro-life demonstrators walked along Constitution Avenue towards the U.S. Capitol on their way to the Supreme Court building  The 40th Annual March for Life  took place in Washington, D.C. which included many groups from the Archdiocese of St. Louis.

WASHINGTON — The hundreds of thousands of participants at the annual March for Life in Washington Jan. 25 demonstrated just how determined they are not only by showing up in such large numbers on a bitter cold day but by continuing a 40-year tradition of protesting the U.S. Supreme Court's decision legalizing abortion.

"Forty years ago, people thought opposition to the pro-life movement would eventually disappear," Boston Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley told the crowd assembled on the National Mall for a rally prior to the march along Constitution Avenue to the front of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Spirit of Christmas

87-year-old Ernie Rohay is known by many on South Grand Avenue as Mr. Christmas.  Rohay has a collection of 96 Christmas trees which he uses to decorate his home and his neighbors.

Ernie Rohay has a Christmas lights display that would make Clark Griswold proud, but it's the joy that radiates from within him that reflects the true spirit of Christmas.

Team unity propels Cor Jesu field hockey squad

Cor Jesu Academy field hockey players Katherine Zanaboni (25) and Sophia Carretero (34) celebrated after a 4-1 win over Edwardsville High School during the playoffs at Parkway South High School in Manchester Oct. 27. The team won again Oct. 30 over John Burroughs 2-0 and advanced to the Final Four Nov. 1 along with Nerinx Hall, Villa Duchesne and MICDS..

Cor Jesu's field hockey team has had a season to remember, picking up praises from across the St. Louis area and beyond.

No matter what happens in the Midwest Field Hockey semifinals (scheduled after press time, Nov. 1) and the championship game Nov. 3, it has been an amazing season for Cor Jesu.

Wedding Jubilee Mass

LISA JOHNSTON | lisajohnston@archstl.org  Jim Doherty leaned over to kiss his bride Barbara during the sign of peace at Mass. The couple from Our Lady of Lourdes Parish have been married for 60 years and were in attendance at the Annual Silver and Golden Wedding Jubilee Mass. The Mass was celebrated at the Cathedral Basilica on Sunday, Oct. 14 with Archbishop Robert J. Carlson. In attendance were 81 Silver, 95 Golden and 129 couples with over 50 years of marriage.

In attendance were 81 couples celebrating their silver anniversary, 95 with golden anniversaries and 129 couples married than 50 years.
