Community helps make senior residences a 'village'

We've all heard the expression that it takes a village to raise a child. But it also could be said that it takes a community -- staff, friends, relatives, neighbors, volunteers -- to help make a senior living residence a village.

More than 500 residents, employees and family members marked Community Appreciation Day at Friendship Village Sunset Hills earlier this month with mechanical and inflatable amusements, games, prizes, face painting and more.

Ageless seniors to be recognized

Getting older does not necessarily mean slowing down.

St. Andrew's Resources for Senior System will honor 20 individuals as part of the 2013 class of Ageless-Remarkable St. Louisans. Ageless honors seniors over age 75 who are living vibrant and productive lives.

Sister of Christian Charity Mary Ann Eultgen will be among the honorees. Sister Mary Ann serves at St. Anthony's Medical Center in pastoral services.

Self-centered society forgets the elderly, pope says

VATICAN CITY

While the fight to preserve life is often centered on abortion and capital punishment, the future Pope Francis also warned against a more subtle form of disregard for human dignity: what he called "covert euthanasia."

"In this consumerist, hedonist and narcissistic society, we are accustomed to the idea that there are people that are disposable," among them, the elderly, then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio said in a book published earlier this year.

Our Lady of the Pillar parishioners look back over 75 years

It was a different time, more than 60 years ago, when the associate pastor drove the school bus. This is just one memory from two Our Lady of the Pillar parishioners who reflected on life in the school and parish as they celebrate the 75th anniversary of their parish.

"Pillar has been a huge part of my life," Syd Rodway said. "There are so many stories. I wouldn't know where to begin." Rodway's family has been a part of the parish for three generations. He began attending the school in 1947 and his family moved into the parish shortly after.

Grandparents: Linking generations

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

When the 76-year-old Pope Francis went to World Youth Day this summer, he had grandparents, or at least society's elders, on his mind, and he honored them in a special way July 26, the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne and Grandparents Day in many countries.

In dozens of homilies and speeches since becoming pope in March, Pope Francis has referred with great affection to his grandmother, Rosa, and her role in teaching him the faith.
