In Plain Sight project an eye-opener for Wentzville teacher

Mattie posed for a photo, taken by her grandmother Sharon, with a signed a photograph of herself and buyer Steve Henry at the Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service, “In Plain Sight” photography auction dinner Aug. 19 at the St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre. Henry was a teacher at Mattie’s school, but didn’t know she was homeless until the fundraiser dinner.

Steve Henry was caught by surprise when he discovered a student with whom he often interacted at his school was homeless.

It was a prime example of how homelessness often is in plain sight, but yet remains hidden, the Wentzville teacher said.

Captain Norman Mann, right, of St. Louis County police department accompanied protesters Aug. 23, 2014, two weeks after the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson. The photo is among those in the exhibit “Change the Narrative” at The Good Shepherd Gallery.

The Good Shepherd Gallery has come full circle.

Sister Glynis Mary McMamanon, RGS, specifically chose Ferguson as home for her art ministry as a result of the events surrounding the death of Michael Brown Aug. 9, 2014. Ferguson was in need of good news and what better way than art to sooth the community. The gallery opened in November 2015.

Josh has called the underbelly of a highway overpass his home on and off for the past four years.

Photos he took recently show what life looks like underneath the overpass. Sleeping bags, a few chairs and some tents provide refuge from the elements. His favorite photos include his "family" — homeless friends who share the space with him in St. Charles County

Recently, I noted some of the significant ways in which photography has evolved, especially through new technology. For starters, in earlier days, many couldn't afford a decent 35mm film camera or wouldn't know how to operate one. Now smart phones come with a built-in camera — ever ready to snap a selfie or group photo at any given moment, and send it instantaneously to social media platforms.
