Senate team to review Planned Parenthood documents

The Missouri Senate will form a bipartisan team to review documents submitted by Planned Parenthood as part of an ongoing investigation of the abortion provider.

Through its lawyer, Planned Parenthood of St. Louis has agreed to produce documents in response to a subpoena by the Senate Interim Committee of the Sanctity of Life, which has been investigating Planned Parenthood's practices in Missouri since last year.

Dr. James Miller, the owner of St. Louis-based Pathology Services Inc., provided that description at a joint House committee hearing Oct. 14 at the Missouri State Capitol. The hearing was led by Rep. Diane Franklin, R-Camdenton, chairwoman of the Children and Families committee.

About three dozen people lined the sidewalk in front of Pathology Services Inc. this weekend to protest the company's business with Planned Parenthood. They also wanted answers to what the lab does to fetal remains from abortions after pathology examinations.

Pathology Services, Inc., is an independent pathology laboratory specializing in surgical pathology and cytology services. They are the third-party provider of pathology services for abortions performed at Planned Parenthood. The company was named at a hearing of the Missouri Senate Interim Committee on the Sanctity of Life, which is investigating how Planned Parenthood operates in Missouri.

Planned Parenthood in St. Louis was cited earlier this year for not sending pathology reports from abortions to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, as required by law.

That was the latest item revealed at an Aug. 25 hearing of the Missouri Senate's Interim Committee on the Sanctity of Life, which is investigating how Planned Parenthood operates in Missouri. The committee began meeting this month in response to the Center for Medical Progress' undercover videos depicting Planned Parenthood officials discussing the sale of fetal body parts.
