Bp. Sirba: Prayer, courage and unity are tools for promoting joy

How do we promote joy of the Gospel in a throwaway culture? The answer: through prayer, courage and a desire for unity.

Bishop Paul Sirba of the Diocese of Duluth, Minn., addressed the topic before 600 people who attended the sixth annual Archbishop's Gospel of Life Prayer Breakfast May 13 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Clayton. The event was hosted by the St. Louis chapter of Legatus.

EDITORIAL | Opening the door to joy

A new Pew Research Center survey shows that there is a continuing decline in the number of people who consider themselves part of any religion. The largest shift is occurring among the "millennial" generation, generally defined as those born from the early 1980s to the early 2000s.

The survey, conducted in 2014, revealed that the percentage of Americans who identify themselves as Christians has declined by 8 percent since the last survey in 2007. Forty-one percent of respondents who said they were raised Catholic no longer identify with the faith.

Celebrating the Gospel of Life

Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of Oklahoma City was the keynote speaker at the fifth annual Gospel of Life Prayer Breakfast sponsored by Legatus. Following Mass celebrated by Archbishop Robert J. Carlson of St. Louis, Archbishop Coakley shared some of his personal history to illustrate the point that before they can spread the Good News, evangelizers must be evangelized. 'Gospel of Life' prayer breakfast

Legatus of St. Louis is hosting a prayer breakfast Thursday, May 22, with Mass celebrated by Archbishop Robert J. Carlson and a keynote address by Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of Oklahoma City.
