Fontbonne lands home-field advantage

Pending final approval, Fontbonne University's purchase of the former John F. Kennedy Catholic High School property represents a win-win for the college and the archdiocese, which owned the campus in Manchester.

For the archdiocese, the former Catholic high school retains its rich heritage of Catholic education, rather than being bulldozed for redevelopment as housing or retail, or being purchased for a public school or secular university.

Mary statue gets new home as archdiocesan schools repurpose former JFK items

St. Mary’s High School recently installed a Mary statue that used to reside on the front lawn outside the former convent at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School.

On that day in August, St. Mary's High School principal Kevin Hacker was on a scouting mission at the former John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Manchester.

The archdiocese, which closed Kennedy in May and owned the property, had invited archdiocesan high school officials for a walk-through to claim items for use in their schools: office and sports equipment, student desks, classroom supplies — whatever wasn't nailed down. But something caught Hacker's eye outside.

A statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the earthly mother of Jesus Christ, and namesake of St. Mary's High School.

Fontbonne steps up with a game-changing promise

Drawing inspiration from the archdiocesan Today & Tomorrow Educational Foundation, Fontbonne University has made a big promise to financially disadvantaged families — the promise of tuition-free college education.

The Fontbonne Promise, which debuts for the 2018-19 academic year, offers the no-cost opportunity — full tuition and fees for up to five years — for college freshmen who qualify academically but have estimated family contributions of zero on FAFSA, the federal student aid application. The program is open only to Missouri residents.

"I love the camp!" the rising senior from Ursuline Academy said, emphasizing the "love" part, between camp sessions June 23. "It's a really good learning experience."

Under the auspices of Fontbonne math and computer science professor Guanyu Tian, 29, the two-week summer camp introduced Kates and 17 high school-age cohorts to cyber security in defense of governments, businesses and individuals.

Pope Francis, in a few meaningful words, can pull together the work of our hands and the yearning of our hearts and minds. In his brief address Feb. 9 to the Congregation of Catholic Education at the Vatican, he affirmed the mission-rich approach to education embraced by Fontbonne University and other Catholic Universities.

Record-setting guard touts Fontbonne’s qualities

Emily Haring drove down court against Robert Morris University-Peoria Jan. 7. She set the school’s all-time career assists record earlier in the season against Robert Morris University-Springfield.

Emmie Haring settled in quickly at Fontbonne University, but it was familiar territory; she'd spent her high school years at St. Joseph's Academy, another school sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

At St. Joseph's, she was surrounded by teammates who went on to colleges with top-tier, big-budget basketball programs. Fontbonne, which plays at a lower collegiate level, proved to be a good fit for her, however.
