Faithful Fan | For Chaminade grad, no good deed goes unpunished

Recently, there's been a fuss about Chaminade graduate Mike Lewis II, a sophomore guard on the Duquesne University basketball team.

No, he isn't another college player who got in trouble with the law or violated school or team rules.

He gave a pizza and chicken wings to a woman living in her car near his apartment and talked with her, a gesture that was recorded and placed on social media with an uplifting message: "Noticed a lady living in her car the past week and did what I could, don't just walk past people if you can help do so #GodsPlan."

Super Bowl player’s contributions far exceed on-field efforts

Super Bowl Sunday is over, but it's hard to let the football season go without commending Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Chris Long's contributions this year. The former St. Louis Ram was solid on the field, helping his team to the Super Bowl. In the NFC championship game against the Minnesota Vikings, Long had two tackles, two QB hits and a fumble recovery. He tipped quarterback Case Keenum's arm leading to an interception by Patrick Robinson, who returned it for a touchdown to tie the score.

FAITHFUL FAN | St. Dominic High grads star for Quincy University soccer team

The women's soccer team at Quincy University went 13-1 in conference play this past fall, with a 17-4-1 overall record — the second-most wins in the program's history.

The Hawks won their first game in the NCAA tournament against Bellarmine University before losing 3-1 to Grand Valley State University. Nevertheless, the team from the Catholic university in Illinois finished the season ranked 11th in the final National Poll United Soccer Coaches Association Poll.

FAITHFUL FAN | CYC soccer teams, Musial Awards show sportsmanship is alive

When athletes behave badly, the public knows about it. Take, for example, University of Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield who last month taunted and made an obscene gesture toward the University of Kansas team in a game won by Oklahoma 41-3. Reports have detailed similar incidents in the NFL.

But sportsmanship is alive and well in the Archdiocese of St. Louis and across the country.

FAITHFUL FAN | Author gives plenty of reasons to embrace Blues hockey

Have faith, St. Louis sports fans. The Houston Astros baseball team began in 1962, and it took them 55 years to win the World Series. That brings hope for the St. Louis Blues, which became an NHL franchise in 1967.

Despite the lack of a Stanley Cup championship, the Blues have missed the playoffs only eight times and have a plethora of highlights throughout their 50 seasons.

FAITHFUL FAN | Catholic guys help resurrect a colorful baseball team

It should come as no surprise that a couple Catholic guys believe in a resurrection.

In this case, "resurrection" refers to the St. Louis Browns baseball team. The Browns played in St. Louis from 1902 through the 1953 season before moving to Baltimore to become the Baltimore Orioles.
