St. Mary’s Preschool in North County to close at end of school year

St. Mary's Special Services is transitioning from a site-based preschool to a service-provider model in North County to reach more preschool-age children with special needs in that area.

The board of directors of St. Mary's Special Services, in consultation with the archdiocesan Catholic Education Office, on March 23 approved a transition from a site-based operation in Spanish Lake to a service-provider model in Catholic preschools and elementary schools throughout North County. The move will triple the number of preschool-age children with special needs they will serve in North County.

New southside school to be named South City Catholic Academy

Father Craig Holway visited with first-graders at St. Joan of Arc School as they discovered how many pumpkin seeds are inside of a pumpkin. He helped Ana Lopez with her seed count. St. Joan of Arc will become the site for a new partnership model school to be called South City Catholic Academy, which will open for the 2017-18 school year.

The new partnership model school in south St. Louis now has a name: South City Catholic Academy. The school will combine Our Lady of Sorrows and St. Joan of Arc schools and will operate at St. Joan of Arc. St. James the Greater School, originally included in the partnership school plan, will remain open as a parish-based elementary school at its site for the 2017-18 school year.

Kids improve smiles after fun, energetic dental health show

St. Louis Catholic Academy students cheered at a performance of the Land of Smiles, an educational program sponsored by Delta Dental that educates elementary students on proper dental hygiene.

"Brush! Brush! Brush!" shouted students in unison at the St. Louis Catholic Academy gymnasium, pumping their arms above their heads.

The kindergarten through third-grade students giggled as the "Tooth Wizard" emerged from behind a curtain. It's all part of Delta Dental's Land of Smiles program, which has reached 750,000 children through 3,600 school-based performances since 2002. The tour with two cast members is visiting 300 schools this academic year, stopping at St. Louis Catholic Academy in north St. Louis among other archdiocesan schools.

Evangelization is simply 'sharing something good and helpful to other people,' speaker says

In the homily for the Mass to kick off the 2015-16 school year, Archbishop Robert J. Carlson quoted Pope Francis from "Evangelii Gaudium" ("The Joy of the Gospel").

"An evangelizer must never look like someone who just came from a funeral," Pope Francis wrote. "May the world of our time ... receive the good news not from evangelizers who are dejected, discouraged or anxious, but from ministers of the Gospels whose lives glow with fever, who have first received the joy of Christ."
