Cathedral Concerts kicks off 25th season

The English boy choir, Libera, will perform Wednesday, Aug. 9, at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis to open the 25th season of the Cathedral Concerts.

After ending last season on a high note with a world-renowned performer, Cathedral Concerts is picking up right where it left off with more world-renowned performers to kick off its 25th season.

The English boys choir, Libera, will open the 12-concert series on Wednesday, Aug. 9, at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. It'll be Libera's third appearance here but first since 2011. The 24th season concluded in May with a bonus concert by Franciscan Friar Allesandro Brustenghi three weeks after the original season-ending show.

As Scott Kennebeck says, "Sometimes, the Holy Spirit works in mysterious ways."

How else does one explain the upcoming performance by a world-renowned tenor falling into his lap?

"I just got a call out of the blue," said Kennebeck, the executive director of the Cathedral Concerts series, which extended its 24th season by three weeks to accommodate the performance by Friar Alessandro Brustenghi.

Jacobs and soprano Christine Brewer, who teamed on a new recording, “Divine Redeemer,” gave a free performance Oct. 14 for children from 13 Catholic and public grade schools in Missouri and Illinois. The children also were treated to a demonstration of the organ’s workings.

Molly Seeser, a fifth-grader at Holy Redeemer School in Webster Groves, sat confidently at the organ at the front of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis and began playing before a gathering of about 800 people.

Pretty good for a first-time organist who's been playing the piano since she was age 5 or 6. After he asked for volunteers to play the organ, Paul Jacobs, the only organist to win a Grammy Award, picked Molly and Harrison Parish, a seventh-grader at St. Louis the King School at the Cathedral.
