Tutoring grant

The Saigh Foundation recently presented the English Tutoring Project (ETP) with a $5,000 grant for its mission to provide English language skills for children at no charge to the families or schools served. ETP, founded in 1998 by 17 congregations of women religious, serves 116 students from 14 countries of origin in eight Catholic elementary schools in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. The foundation was created by Fred M. Saigh to serve as a legacy of the gifts he gave throughout his lifetime to the community of St. Louis. Saigh was the child of immigrants.

In memoriam

Longtime pro-life advocate Ann O'Brien died on Feb. 7. O'Brien for years was active in the pro-life movement and participated in peaceful sit-ins in front of abortion clinics in the 1970s and '80s. A memorial Mass was celebrated Feb. 15 at Holy Infant Church in Ballwin. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Funderwear fills needs

Cor Jesu Academy and St. Joseph's Academy collected nearly 18,000 pair of new underwear and socks in their 13th annual Funderwear Challenge for clients of St. Patrick Center. St. Joseph's won the basketball game and tug-of-war Jan. 11. Cor Jesu won the Funderwear Challenge.

Roman Catholic Foundation starts endowment for retired priests

Father Harold Voelker, Father Ronald Rubbelke, Father Robert Argent and Msgr. Richard Lubeley joined Roman Catholic Foundation of Eastern Missouri president/CEO Mark Guyol for the bell ringing to celebrate the establishment of the Retired Archdiocesan Priests' Endowment Fund. The Priests' Mutual Benefit Society of the Archdiocese of St. Louis established the fund to provide ongoing general support for retired archdiocesan priests.
