'Special Assignments'

In the annual big shuffle of priestly appointments each June, most moves involve the comings and goings at parishes throughout the Archdiocese of St. Louis.

Newly ordained priests get their first assignments, associates become first-time pastors or parochial administrators and pastors move to new parishes, either as pastors or senior associates. Meanwhile, a few veteran priests call it a day, figuratively hanging up their collars for retirement.

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis announced he will create five new cardinals June 28; the new cardinals-designate come from Mali, Spain, Sweden, Laos and El Salvador.

Pope names 13 consultors to Vatican Secretariat for Communications

VATICAN CITY — U.S. Jesuit Father James Martin of America magazine and Michael P. Warsaw, chairman of the board and CEO of EWTN Global Catholic Network, were named by Pope Francis to help advise the Vatican Secretariat for Communications.

The Vatican released the names of the new appointments April 12.

Many issues confront us in this election. Abortion and euthanasia. Immigration and national security. The list goes on.

The issues don't carry the same weight. In one sense that means different issues appeal to different people. But is there an objective scale of values to weigh the issues? How do we consider all the issues, while giving each issue its proper weight?

The U.S. Catholic bishops provide guidance in a document issued every four years in preparation for the election: Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship.

Clergy appointments for permanent deacons

Deacon Patrick J. Belding, a permanent deacon, is appointed to assist the pastor of Christ Prince of Peace Parish in Manchester.

Deacon James K. Carter, a permanent deacon, is appointed to assist the pastor/administrator of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Washington.

Deacon Timothy L. Dunn, a permanent deacon, is appointed to assist the pastor of Our Lady Parish in Festus.

Deacon Donald A. Elbert, a permanent deacon, is appointed to assist the pastor/administrator of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Washington.

Archbishop Robert J. Carlson has made the following appointments:

Deacon Bruce Burkard, a permanent deacon, presently assisting the pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Florissant, is also assigned to serve the Magdala Foundation/Russell House, effective May 15, 2013.

Deacon Joseph Kroutil, a permanent deacon, presently assigned to assist the pastor of St. Ferdinand Parish in Florissant, is now assigned to assist the pastor of St. Angela Merici Parish in Florissant, effective May 15, 2013.
