SLUH’s patience pays off with Mid-States hockey title

After winning the Mid-States High School Hockey Challenge Cup Championship, the St. Louis University High team didn't want their on-ice celebration to end. So the driver of the Zamboni ice resurfacer waited patiently. But he needed to go to work.

As a compromise, the Junior Billikens moved the jubilation to the hallway and locker room under the stands at Scottrade Center, where they had defeated De Smet Jesuit High School 4-0 on March 13.

Incarnate’s Wehrmann is accomplished yet humble

Ellie Wehrmann of Incarnate Word Academy blazed across the pool at the Missouri Class 1 state Girls Swimming and Diving Championships in February at the St. Peters Rec-Plex in St. Peters. Wehrmann, who won two events, inspires her teammates at the Catholic high school.

If she wanted to show off, Ellie Wehrmann could walk around with some of her hard-fought-for medals around her neck.

But that's not the style of the ever-smiling Incarnate Word Academy sophomore. She barely mentions the hard work it's taken to become one of the elite swimmers in the state. Wehrmann won the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle meets at Class 2 Missouri State High School Girls Swimming Championship last month at the St. Peters Rec-Plex.

Ben Norwine displayed pinpoint passing and quick defense in Duchesne High School's 49-36 win against St. Charles West on Feb. 16. Twice in the first half, he grabbed an opponent's errant pass, dashed down the court and bounced a quick pass to teammates for easy layups.

St. Joseph’s volleyball star begins Penn State career

Setter Gabby Blossom was a top player in high school at St. Joseph’s Academy and now will play volleyball for Penn State University.

Friends, family and fans of Gabby Blossom already knew of the St. Joseph's Academy volleyball star's athletic achievements, academic excellence and exemplary character, but it's public knowledge now.

The qualities are part of the selection of the Gatorade Player of the Year award, established in 1985 to recognize the nation's most elite high school student-athletes. Blossom was chosen the Missouri Volleyball Player of the Year, in addition to being named one of three finalists for the national award.

Balanced Incarnate Word team enjoying its season

“Whatever it takes” — speed, quickness, tough defense and rebounding — could be the slogan for the Incarnate Word basketball team this season.

The Catholic high school in north St. Louis County has a state-record eight state basketball championships, including last season. Current University of Connecticut star Napheesa Collier leads a long list of former star players. A loyal following packs the gym for home games.
