A funeral Mass for Sister Mary Brian Rafferty was celebrated Jan. 2 in the chapel at the Mercy Sisters' Catherine's Residence Chapel in Creve Coeur.
Sister Mary Brian, an educator for 55 years before retiring in 2010, died Dec. 29. She was 84.
Born in New Orleans, she entered the Sisters of Mercy community in 1950 and professed final vows in 1956. Sister Mary Brian received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Webster College in St. Louis in 1955 and a master's degree in special education from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee in 1971.
A funeral Mass for Sister Catherine Albers was celebrated Jan. 4 at Our Lady of Angels Convent Chapel in Wheaton, Ill.
Sister Catherine, 96, died Dec. 27 at Resurrection Life Center in Chicago.
Born in St. Louis, she entered the Wheaton Franciscan order in 1938 and professed perpetual vows in 1944. Sister Catherine received a bachelor's degree in nursing and a master's degree in health administration.
A funeral Mass for Sister Yvonne Thranow was celebrated Dec. 9 at Seton Residence Chapel in Evansville, Ind. The Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul died Dec. 5 at Seton Residence. She was 89 and had served as a teacher, social worker, agency director and local community superior.
Born in Los Angeles and baptized Rita Yvonne, she entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis in 1946. She earned a bachelor's degree in history from Fontbonne College (now university) in St. Louis in 1952 and a master's degree in social work from St. Louis University in 1954.
A funeral Mass for Mercy Sister Virginia Marie Jones was celebrated Dec. 13 at Catherine's Residence in Frontenac.
Sister Virginia Marie, 88, died Dec. 9. She was a Sister of Mercy for 68 years.
Born in Somerville, Mass., Sister Virginia Marie entered the Sisters of Mercy community in 1948 and professed final vows in 1954. She received a bachelor's degree in nursing from St. Mary's College in Xavier, Kan., in 1957 and a certificate in pastoral education in 1991.
