What do we Catholics believe, and what difference does it make in our daily lives?

It might seem too obvious to mention, but we believe in God. More specifically, we believe in God as He has revealed Himself to us through the life, death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Live the Year of Faith with joyful enthusiasm

Archbishop Robert J. Carlson addressed “Good Leaders, Good Shepherds,” a Catholic Leadership Institute program at the Cardinal Rigali Center Oct. 31. The ongoing formation and development program for priests focuses on priestly identity, ministry and fraternity.

The Year of Faith has begun. Proclaimed by our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI a year ago, and officially inaugurated last month on the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, this yearlong meditation on the mystery of our Christian faith is intended to "shed ever clearer light on the joy and renewed enthusiasm of the encounter with Christ."

Before the Cross | We are called to holiness and the perfection of charity

All baptized Christians are called to holiness and the perfection of charity. This means we are called to be like Jesus, to live as He did in perfect conformity to the Father's will and in total self-giving for the good of others. This is a tall order. Without the grace of Christ and the gifts of the Holy Spirit, it would be impossible for us. As it is, even the best of us give in to selfishness and sin -- falling far short of the perfection to which we are called.

Dennis Riggs, executive director of the Higher Education Channel (HEC-TV), presented Archbishop Robert J. Carlson an award statue for the 2012 Telly Award for Best Documentary. For the past month, I've been writing about the responsibilities of faithful citizenship. Because of the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, I have been using the council's teaching as a point of reference for the task of forming our consciences -- especially during an election year.

Last week we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council on Oct. 11, 1962. In full continuity with nearly 2,000 years of Church teaching and practice, this historic gathering set the agenda for our future. It called attention to the fundamental mission of the Church to transform human society in light of the Gospel.

Saint Louis Abbey Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Church Dedication

Archbishop Robert J. Carlson celebrated a Mass for the 50th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Abbey Church of Saint Mary and Saint Louis with the Benedictine Monks and faithful of the Parish community of St. Anselm. The Archbishop entered the church with Father Laurence Kriegshauser, OSB and Father Joseph Post and was led by Father Dominic Lenk, OSB.

The Benedictine monks of The Abbey of Saint Mary and Saint Louis celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the dedication of Abbey Church on its campus in Creve Coeur. Members of the The Abbey Family, including the monks; students, parents and alumni of Saint Louis Priory School; faculty; staff; and parishioners of Saint Anselm Parish gathered for Mass on Sunday, October 7. Archbishop Robert Carlson celebrated the Mass.
