A funeral Mass for Mercy Sister Virginia Marie Jones was celebrated Dec. 13 at Catherine's Residence in Frontenac.

Sister Virginia Marie, 88, died Dec. 9. She was a Sister of Mercy for 68 years.

Born in Somerville, Mass., Sister Virginia Marie entered the Sisters of Mercy community in 1948 and professed final vows in 1954. She received a bachelor's degree in nursing from St. Mary's College in Xavier, Kan., in 1957 and a certificate in pastoral education in 1991.

Sister Virginia Marie held novitiate duties at Mother of Mercy Novitiate in Webster Groves from 1948-51. She served as a staff nurse and pastoral care volunteer at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis from 1972-88. Sister Virginia Marie volunteered as a secretary and receptionist in the cancer center of St. John's Mercy Medical Center from 1991-2006. She also served at hospitals in Mississippi, Texas and Arkansas as a staff nurse, supervisor and nursing school director. She retired to Catherine's Residence in Frontenac in 2006 where she enjoyed reading, playing in the chimes band, doing needlepoint and listening to classical music.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
