Catholic Family Services has opened an outpatient mental health office in Herculaneum to serve children and families in Jefferson County.

The office opened after Catholic Family Services received a three-year grant of more than $500,000 from the Jefferson Memorial Community Foundation. Therapists will provide individual and family therapy services to those seeking support and those who may be mandated for treatment.

The grant enables Catholic Family Services to assist children and their families. A recent Jefferson County needs assessment sponsored by Jefferson Memorial Community Foundation showed 59 percent of respondents identified mental health services as a "crisis level" or "high priority" of need. Thanks to the grant, Catholic Family Services will provide affordable services to children and their families.

Guided by the teachings of Jesus Christ, Catholic Family Services supports healing and improved mental health for families and children of all backgrounds through professional counseling and psychiatric services. It is an agency of Catholic Charities of St. Louis.

With the opening of this eighth location, Catholic Family Services not only provides services, but also is working to promote the breakdown of what is known as a mental health stigma — stereotypes and prejudice that result from misconceptions about mental illness. Tom Duff, Catholic Family Services executive director, said that "research tells us that one out of four people have some type of mental health event in their life. We need to recognize that asking for help or guidance through those times can only make you stronger."

As an example, Duff said that if a person is sick from another illness they typically schedule an appointment right away. "Mental health care should be viewed the same," he said. "When the need arises everyone should feel just as comfortable seeking this type of support."

Catholic Family Services new office is on McNutt Street (Exit 178 directly off Interstate 55) in Herculaneum. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (636) 638-2203.

Other offices are in Crestwood, north St. Louis, Florissant, O'Fallon, Troy, Union and Manchester. Catholic Family Services provides counseling, including ongoing therapy groups, a School Partnership Program and Marriage and Family Clinic; psychiatry, including evaluation and medication management; community education; a Fatherhood Program for noncustodial fathers; and language interpretation and translation.
