Archbishop Carlson to consecrate archdiocese to the Holy Spirit
Archbishop Robert J. Carlson will consecrate the Archdiocese of St. Louis to the care of the Holy Spirit at the Pentecost Vigil Mass at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at Holy Redeemer Church, 17 Joy Ave. in Webster Groves, and at 10 a.m. Mass Sunday, June 8, at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, Lindell and Newstead Ave. in the Central West End of St. Louis.
A consecration means setting apart -- in this case the people of the archdiocese -- for a sacred purpose.
The consecration will help people live out in missionary action and discipleship the four pillars of the "Alive in Christ" initiative of the archdiocese: stewardship, evangelization, social justice and education.
Pope Francis reminds us that the action of the Holy Spirit, "The Soul of the Church," is to guide us to the truth. "He leads us not only to an encounter with Jesus, the fullness of Truth, but guides us 'into' the Truth, helping us enter into a deeper communion with Jesus Himself," the pope stated. The Holy Father acknowledges that people cannot accomplish these things on their own, but instead must place their future in faith confidently in the hands of the Holy Spirit.
The celebration mirrors the miracle of Pentecost when St. Peter "astounded and bewildered" the crowds who understood the proclamation of the Gospel, each in their own tongue.
All parishes are asked to pray the prayer of consecration during the Pentecost weekend. For copies of the prayer card, see the Catholic Renewal Center website, www.archstl.org/renewal or call (314) 792-7734.
