Volleyball, field hockey teams finish seasons to remember
Playoffs continue in various high school sports before the fall season concludes in the next few weeks.
Two Catholic schools from the archdiocese won championships in volleyball and another came up just short of a title. And in field hockey, Cor Jesu Academy defeated Nerinx Hall to advance to the championship game before losing 2-0 to Lafayette.
In Class 3 volleyball, Villa Duchesne defeated St. Pius X of Kansas City 25-21 and 25-22 to win the title Nov. 5. Villa Duchesne ended the year 35-5-2. Megan Peterson, Bridget Boyle, Marggie Schroeder, Faith Rolwes and Riley Lawrence were among the players leading the team. Peterson had a team-high 10 kills in the win and Rolwes led with 27 assists.
More than 700 students, parents and faculty from Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School gathered at the school Nov. 8 to honor coach Shane Weber's winning team. The title marks Villa Duchesne's first state championship in volleyball.
In Class 2 volleyball, St. Pius X in Festus defeated Fatima 27-25 and 25-16 to bring home the championship Nov. 5. Amelia Held led St. Pius with 14 kills and Joellen Grohs had 25 assists. St. Pius ended the year 28-6-9 and claimed its first volleyball title.
In Class 1 volleyball, Valle Catholic High School in Ste. Genevieve ended a fine season by coming up just short against Eminence, which took the finals 25-16, 25-17. Valle was led by Gretchen Koller with six kills and Natalie Grass and Allisyn Dalton with five apiece. Valle had a 28-6-1 record.
In field hockey, Cor Jesu advanced to the final game of the Midwest Field Hockey Tournament with a 4-2 win in penalty strokes after a 2-2 tie over Nerinx Hall Nov. 4 in a game completed after being halted the previous day because of darkness and rain. Molly Croghan's stroke assured the win.
Cor Jesu played hard the next day against Lafayette but couldn't overcome their opponent. Cor Jesu ended the season 20-3.
