Catholic schools seek field hockey title
Two Catholic high schools battled each other Nov. 1 for one of four spots remaining in the Midwest Field Hockey championships, with Cor Jesu topping Ursuline 3-0.
Cor Jesu was to play another Catholic high school, Nerinx Hall, on Nov. 3, with the winner advancing to the finals Saturday, Nov. 5. MICDS and Lafayette play in the other semifinal.
Liz Fox, varsity field hockey coach at Cor Jesu, said that in the game against Ursuline, "We played to our strengths, moved the ball quickly and finished on great opportunities."
Molly Croghan had two goals and Tori Zanaboni scored the other. Caroline McGowan had the shutout in goal to help propel the team to a 19-2 record so far.
This season, Fox said, the team has "trained hard, mentally and physically every practice, preparing for each game as it came, and never looked past any team. We constantly re-evaluated our strengths and weaknesses, and as a team set short and long-term goals to work toward. All of our hard work and discipline has provided us wins in our last 17 straight games, including today's game against Ursuline."
Nerinx defeated John Burroughs 3-2 in strokes Nov. 1. Regulation goals were scored by Gabby Caladrino and Meghan Stuckel. After two overtime periods, the team won 4-2 in strokes, with tallies from Abbie Marshall, Stuckel, Hayley Bokern and Molly Trevathan. Standing out in goal was Deni Kamper.
Nerinx coach Nancy Milward cited her team's intensity. "We played with a lot of heart and stayed focused throughout the game."
Earlier in the season the team, 19-7, defeated Burroughs in a similar close game. "John Burroughs has always been a tough field hockey opponent for Nerinx. ... to beat them again in overtime was a fabulous win for our program," Milward said.
Cor Jesu is a rival school, with the girls having friends there, and it holds the promise of being a fun game, she said.
The field hockey finals will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 5 at John Burroughs, 755 South Price Road in Ladue.
