The term "stole fee" is a traditional term, yet one that the Church has tried to distance herself from. Fee is a word that we generally use when we are speaking about giving remittance or payment for a good or a service. For example, when parents sign up their children in the parish grade school, there is a registration fee attached to that. This sum of money covers the cost to process the paperwork and to hold a place in the class for their child. In this case, the parents pay this fee, expecting a service to be rendered for them: the enrollment of their child in school.
