Hunger affects a fourth of children in state, study shows

Spending on groceries is at a bare minimum as well, though they are helped each month by the Circle of Concern food pantry in Valley Park. Evan and Vickie's problems began in 2009 when they both lost their jobs. They first raided funds in a retirement account. After a series of low-paying, part-time jobs, Evan opened a cleaning business. Vickie found a full-time job, and they no longer needed help from the food pantry.
