In "The Spirit of the Liturgy," then-Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) commented that as people approach God, speech is not enough. The words we speak turn into singing before God. Such an experience is rooted in the Bible. The words "sing" and "song" appear 309 times in the Old Testament and 36 in the New Testament, making it one of the most common to appear in the Bible.
