Carlson has challenged Catholics in the Archdiocese of St. Louis to revitalize our Catholic schools so that the 200th anniversary of Catholic education in St. Louis in 2018 is a true cause for rejoicing. He has expressed his strong belief that Catholic schools must be, in the words of Pope Benedict XVI, Alive in Christ, including three critical characteristics -- vibrant Catholic identity, strong student enrollment and sound financial stability. The most fundamental of the three is, without question, an observable, even palpable, Catholic identity.
