The season of Lent is one of the Church's most intense periods of penance, through which we can draw ourselves closer to the Lord. There are many ways in which this can be accomplished, including through spiritual exercises. Perhaps no one knew spiritual exercises better than St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), who wrote Spiritual Exercises, a set of meditations, prayers and other mental exercises in the 16th century.
