Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the retirement of Bishop Robert J. Hermann, who has served as auxiliary bishop of St. Louis since 2002. His retirement is effective Dec. 1, the same day as the appointment of Msgr. Edward M. Rice as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. The announcement comes a year and three months after Bishop Hermann, 76, submitted his resignation to Pope Benedict XVI. Canon law requires that all bishops submit their resignation to the Holy Father on the occasion of their 75th birthday.
