Five other cardinals have St. Louis ties

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly versionSend to friendSend to friend Cardinal Justin Rigali was named a cardinal in 2003 by Pope John Paul II just a week before he left St. Louis to become Archbishop of Philadelphia. Cardinal Rigali had earlier been appointed to Philadelphia, and only a week remained before his installation there. He said at a press conference that being named a cardinal was an honor for both the St. Louis and Philadelphia Archdioceses. Thirty other cardinals were named at that time. Cardinal Rigali was the only American named then.
