Before the cross | The Ten Commandments helpful as warning signs on the road to heaven
A fourth-grade teacher in one of our Catholic schools was asked recently, "Why are you teaching the Ten Commandments? They're so harsh and negative -- all that talk about stealing and adultery and covetousness. Why not teach the Beatitudes instead? They're much more positive."
The teacher replied, "Oh, we teach the Beatitudes too. They teach us about heaven, and, as you say, they're very positive. But our children need to know the negatives as well. They need to be warned about the dangers that they will face as they journey to heaven."
