A woman approached me, picked up a piece of paper on the table between us, looked up at me and half-smiled.

"I am mentally ill."

Briefly taken aback by the stark honesty of her admission, I smiled back at her.

"So am I."

I was manning a vendor table at the "Catholic Women For Christ" conference in February. My purpose was twofold: providing facts and information as a representative of the local branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness as well as selling copies of my book about our family's journey with depression.
