Workshop helps teachers use everyday situations to make math easier for students
For some city Catholic school teachers, improving students' understanding of math is a piece of cake ... or a sub sandwich, to be exact.
"Teaching Mathematics in Grades 3-8: A Human Endeavor" is a professional development project that helps educators learn to use everyday situations -- such as dividing a few sub sandwiches fairly among class members -- to develop the problem-solving skills of individual students.
The project was spearheaded by Gloria Openlander, principal of St. Roch Parish School in the West End of St. Louis.
