Cautious about martial arts
In an article about funding programs in Catholic schools (Feb. 5), your paper showed a picture of a martial arts class being taught in a school gym. While I agree that the self-defense and self-discipline taught in these classes are important, there is a pitfall of which many parents are not aware. These classes can be a gateway into alternative religions.
As a 25-year veteran of the martial arts, I've seen it countless times. To advance in these arts, you must know the tradition behind them, which is an eastern philosophy.
