Deacon Joseph E. Hercules dies; served as ordained deacon since 1989

A funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 25 at St. Matthias Church in Lemay for Deacon Joseph E. Hercules, who served in many roles at the parish since his ordination.
Deacon Hercules, 75, died Jan. 21.
Born in St. Louis, he married his late wife, Mary Elaine Gruber, in 1963. Deacon Hercules was ordained to the diaconate in 1989 by Archbishop John L. May. He served at St. Matthias Parish since his ordination.
Deacon Hercules served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1963. He was employed by Union Electric Co. for more than 30 years, mostly in administration and purchasing.
